Going Far, Together

Why Partnerships Are the Future of Community Impact

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

It is a familiar phrase because it holds a difficult truth, especially for those working to build stronger, more equitable communities. Lasting change does not happen in isolation. It happens through partnership. And partnership, while powerful, is rarely easy.

Every organization, every leader, and every community member brings a unique set of experiences, perspectives, and priorities. Those differences are what make collaboration complex, but also what make it meaningful. When partnerships work, they do not just combine efforts; they expand what is possible.

Today, the need for that kind of collaboration has never been greater.

A Changing Landscape

Nonprofits are navigating a moment of increasing pressure. Demand for services continues to grow, while government funding at both the state and federal levels face uncertainty. At the same time, philanthropic giving is shifting in ways that challenge traditional models.

Fewer people are giving, even as total dollars remain steady-- driven largely by significant gifts from a smaller group of donors. Where organizations once relied on a broader base of support, many now receive the majority of their funding from a small percentage of contributors.

This creates a difficult reality: More need. Fewer resources. Greater competition.

Even organizations committed to working together must balance collaboration with the very real need to sustain, and grow, their own funding.

The Opportunity in Partnership

In this environment, partnership is not just a value, it is a strategy.

Embracing partnership fully requires a shift. It asks organizations and funders to move from a mindset of scarcity to one of shared opportunity. It challenges long-standing assumptions about ownership, recognition, and control.

And it raises important questions:

  • How do we incentivize collaboration in a competitive funding environment?
  • How do we align resources around shared goals rather than individual efforts?
  • How do we build trust across organizations, sectors, and communities?

These are not easy questions. But they are essential ones.

A Foundation Built for This Moment

For more than 110 years, the Indianapolis Foundation has worked alongside partners to respond to the evolving needs of our community.

Since 1916, we have weathered moments of profound change-- global conflicts, economic crises, public health emergencies, and transformative social movements. Through it all, one constant has remained: a commitment to the health and well-being of our community.

Our earliest grants, like underwriting the salary of a nurse serving children with disabilities, reflect a simple but enduring principle: meaningful impact happens when resources are aligned with community need.

Over time, that work has only deepened. Our history is not just one of grantmaking, but of convening, bringing together individuals, organizations, and institutions to tackle challenges that no one entity can solve alone.

Leading Through Collaboration

The challenges facing our communities today are complex and interconnected. They demand coordinated responses across sectors, public, private, and nonprofit.

Community foundations are uniquely positioned to lead in this space. We are not bound to a single issue area or constituency. We are connectors, conveners, and stewards of community resources. We can bring people to the table, align investments, and help ensure that solutions are shaped by those most affected.

We have an opportunity ... and a responsibility ... to do even more.

To invest not only in programs, but in relationships.
To support not only outcomes, but collaboration.
To inspire not only giving, but shared ownership of our community’s future.

Moving Forward, Together

Partnerships are not easy. They require trust, patience, and a willingness to navigate complexity.

But they are also where the most meaningful progress happens.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to working alongside our fundholders, partners, and community members to build something stronger than any one organization could achieve alone.

Because going far has never been a solo endeavor.
